piring dance

The scrumptious Padang cuisine may be the most indulging taste served on West Sumatra’s plates, but the most astounding thing the Minangkabau can work on their plates is through the dramatic performance of Tari Piring or the Plate Dance.

Locally known as Tari Piriang (Minangkabau language for Plate), the attractive dance originates from the city of Solok, about 60Km east of Padang, capital of West Sumatra.

The dance showcases an exceptional feature of placing porcelain or ceramic plates on both open palms of dancers as they perform fast and vibrant choreographies that involve the swaying of plates to every direction and even turning them upside down with their palms turned down.  Amazingly, whatever energetic moves the dancers make, the plates continue to stick as if glued to their palms.

As dramatic climax, at the end of the dance the dancers smash the plates onto the floor, deliberately breaking them into sharp pieces. The dancers will then continue dancing on the pointed shards, remaining completely uninjured.  This action of artists leaping onto piles of pointed shards is considered the magic of Tari Piring.

Originally the dance was a solo performance, but  later it transformed into a  group dance performed by a number of dancers. Although both males or females can perform the dance, uniquely, the Minangkabau adhere to a strict rule : that dancers must be odd  in number.  For this performance, dancers wear traditional Minangkabau costumes featuring the bright color combinations of red, yellow and gold.

Although the Gong and Rebana were the initial musical instruments accompanying the Tari Piring, yet  over time, the dance was made more lively with the enchanting harmony of the Talempong and Saluang. The dancers also wear rings on their fingers, which they click onto the plates, creating  unique rhythmic sounds.

Originally, the dance symbolized the gratefulness of the people to the Almighty God , which was  performed as a ritual during the harvest time. As the influence of Islam spread through the area, the dance relinquished its ritual meaning and evolved into an attractive presentation at weddings, welcoming guests of honor, as well as  presented during other special celebrations. If initially Tari Piring was considered an exclusive art to be shown for the royal family and performed exclusively in palaces or at royal occasions, with time it evolved extensively into a form of folk entertainment.

There are no clear records that can firmly determine the time when Tari Piring was created,  however several sources indicate that this special art form has existed since 800 years ago. The dance is believed to have developed during the golden era of the Sriwijaya Kingdom on Sumatra up to the rise of the Majapahit Kingdom on Java in the 16th century. The arrival of Majapahit on Sumatra drove many Sriwijayan aristocrats to other parts of the archipelago, thus the dance can also be found in other areas, including in the neighboring country of Malaysia.

saman dance

When you come across an Indonesian cultural performance in any international exhibition, it is very much likely that Acehnese vibrant traditional dance, the Saman Dance, would be one of the assorted cultural splendors put on stage. Mostly comparable with any Balinese dance, Saman Dance is one of the sweethearts of Indonesian performing arts, often acts as an ambassador of exceptional Indonesian dances.

Created by a native Acehnese, a religious leader named Sheikh Saman around the 16th century, the dance is widely known as indigenous to the Gayo society as it was born in Central Aceh. Many modern societies in Asian, Australian, and European nations have adopted its harmonious and impulsive mechanism. However, the originality and authenticity of the dance can never be imitated when the essence is always in Aceh.

Performed by a group of dancers wearing mostly colorful and bright traditional uniform, the dance is a development of an art of Acehnese dance called Pok Ane. It is a singing of a poem, combined with claps of hands, pats on chest, and thigh slaps. The movements are so harmonious and sometimes vigorous that would leave the spectators in awe. Saman Dance is truly an entertaining performance that only beautiful minds can create such exquisite and artful techniques.

kecak

The Kecak Dance is an especially unique and one of the most dramatic of all Balinese dances. A combination of dance and drama, the Kecak dance depicts the Hindu epic, “Ramayana,” and tells the story of Prince Rama, who with the help of the monkey-king Hanoman defeats the evil King Rahvana to rescue his Princess Sita. Kecak also has roots in Sanghyang, a sacred ritual based on the idea that during the performance, hyangs, or spiritual entities will enter and possess the bodies of the dancers.
The dance begins just as the glowing sun slowly sets beyond the horizon at sea.  To catch this dramatic moment, the stage is placed with the temple of Tanah Lot or Uluwatu as background. A chorus of 150 men clad in checkered cloths around their waists, representing an army of monkeys, utter percussive sounds. They sit in concentric circles, leaving an open arena with an oil torch in its center.
As the sky darkens, the burning flames of the torch become the only natural lighting of this cacophonous play, creating a truly mystical atmosphere, illuminating the performers and audience alike in a haunting glow.
The circular ensemble sways rhythmically back and forth and waves their hands as the drama unfolds, yet above the chants of the swaying masses, the narrator’s voice can be heard, telling the tale. As the plot progresses, the ring of acapella percussionists enhance the performance of the lead actors in the center by acting as the armies in the battle scenes, and even unite as an enormous, twisting serpent in the performance’s final climax.A triumph of style and emotion over actual story, the Kecak dance is sure to keep every viewer captivated for every second of the show.
The story takes an episode of the great Ramayana epic. It tells about the abduction of Princess Sita by the giant Rahwana when Prince Rama and Princess Sita were wondering in the forests. Prince Rama leaves his wife to chase a golden deer. But first he draws a circle around her, which he tells her not to step out from. Rahwana sees her and through ruse succeeds to abduct her to his palace. In his search for his wife, King Rama meets the monkey king Hanoman who helps him. Hanoman’s monkey army burns Rahwana’s palace, and so the two lovers are happily reunited.
Unlike other Balinese dances, the Kecak is not performed to the accompaniment of Gamelan, which is the Balinese “orchestra.” Instead it is enacted to the sounds of 150 or more male voices chanting “chak-achak-achak,” hence giving the dance its name.  Another unique factor is that the Kecak is also one of the only dances that was created for the sole purpose of entertaining visitors. It is hardly ever watched by the Balinese themselves.
Kecak was originally a trance ritual accompanied by a male chorus. In the 1930’s, the German painter and musician Walter Spies took a deep interest in the ritual while he was living in Bali. He then worked together with Balinese dancer Wayan Limbak to recreate it into a drama, combining themes and movements from the traditional Sanghyang exorcism rituals with portions of the Hindu epic, Ramayana. The intention was to create a dance that was both authentic to Balinese traditions, yet appealing to Western audiences.
Wayan Limbak later toured the globe with a troupe of Balinese performers, thus popularizing the dance and making it famous throughout the world.
Pura Luhur Uluwatu is one of Bali’s 9 main temples, and is one of the places you can personally witness the Kecak Dance. The temple is perched at the edge of a steep cliff, overlooking the crashing waves 70 meters below. Originally a very small temple, Pura Luhur Uluwatu was first expanded by a Javanese sage during the 11th century.
As the temple is sacred ground, one must be properly dressed before entering, as respect to the Balinese Hindus. Sarongs are available free at the entrance for women wearing clothing that does not cover their knees. Visitors to the temple can feel free to roam about and explore the temple grounds, but the central courtyard can only be entered during special rituals.
The Kecak dance is performed at the temple every evening at 6:00 p.m. in an open-air arena  to the backdrop of the ember sky, as the glowing red sun sinks beneath the horizon. Tickets to the dance can be purchased for approximately IDR 75,000. Visitors should note that during high season, tickets are often sold out and should be booked a few days in advance.
Pura Luhur Uluwatu is located on the island of Bali, about 45 minutes from Nusa Dua, or 1 hour 15 minutes from Kuta or Tuban area.

kuda lumping

Art Kuda Lumping is one of the traditional arts that some people mention comes from several areas in East Java, but not only in East Java only Arts Kuda Lumping is there, in Central Java was also known art Kuda Lumping this. Art Kuda Lumping is a dance that is played with a horse artificial media, made of woven bamboo or braid. None of the historical record to explain the origin of this dance, just a verbal history passed down from one generation to the next.

That said, Kuda Lumping dance is a form of appreciation and support of the commoners against the cavalry Diponegoro in the face of the Dutch colonizers. There is also a version that says, that the Kuda Lumping dance depicting the struggle of Broken Raden, who is assisted by Sunan Kalijaga, against the Dutch colonialists. Another version states that, the dance tells about war Mataram troops led the lane I, King of Mataram, to face the Dutch troops.

Regardless of the origin and historical value, Kuda Lumping dance reflects the spirit of heroism and military aspects of a cavalry or cavalry. It is seen from the rhythmic movements, dynamic, and aggressive, with the flick of woven bamboo, mimicking the movement like a horse in the midst of war.

Often the Kuda Lumping dance performances, the show also featured attraction magical smell supernatural powers, such attractions chew glass, slashed the arm with a machete, burn away, walking on broken glass, and others. Perhaps, this reflects the attraction of the supernatural powers developed in the ancient kingdom of Java, and is a non-military aspects that are used to fight the Dutch troops.

In East Java, the art is familiar with the community in some areas, such as Malang, Nganjuk, Tulungagung, and other areas. This dance is usually displayed on certain events, such as the welcome guest of honor, and as a thanksgiving, the intent is granted by the Almighty.

Poetry is sung in the accompanying dance, usually containing the appeal that the human is always doing good deeds and always remember the Great Creator.

In addition to containing the elements of entertainment and religion, traditional arts Kuda Lumping is often also an element of ritual. At Buto Lawas fragments, usually danced by men only and consists of 4 to 6 dancers. Some young dancers bamboo riding and dancing to the music. On this section, the dancers may have possessed Lawas Buto or possessed by spirits. The audience did not escape from this trance phenomena. Many local residents who witnessed the performances into a trance and danced with the dancers. Unconscious, they continued to dance with energetic movements and looks compact with other dancers.

To recover the consciousness of the possessed dancers and audience, each show is always present in the ancestor, that is, those who have the supernatural ability whose presence can be recognized through the clothes she was wearing all black. The progenitor of this will give bidders up to the dancers and audience awareness recover.

In the next round, the dancers are men and women will join to bring a dance named senterewe.

At the end of the dance, the dancers dance movements that are not serancak at the beginning, but have started to relax. and there are six women brought Begon daughter dance. Kuda Lumping dance concludes with Begon Daughter Dance, performed by six women dancers.

reog ponorogo..

The case of the 'stolen' Reog Ponorogo
Reog Ponorogo made headlines across Indonesia in November 2007 when it featured in a Malaysian tourism commercial as a part of the 2007 Malaysia Truly Asia campaign. In Malaysia the dance is referred to as Tari Barongan, but certain elements mark it as an unmistakeable descendant of Reog, most notably the use of the dhadak merak mask which most Malaysian groups import from Ponorogo craftsmen. The use of Reog in this commercial without acknowledgement of its origins was enough to cause an uproar in Ponorogo. But the Malaysians made things even worse by emblazoning the word ‘Malaysia’ on the mask in the place usually reserved for the words ‘Reog Ponorogo’.
In the eyes of the people of Ponorogo this was blasphemy. Despite attempts by the Malaysian ambassador to explain that his country had never claimed that Reog was originally from Malaysia, the Ponorogoans saw it differently. Former Reog artist, mystic and warok (traditionally pederasts with an exalted status as powerful men and leaders), Ahmad Tobroni, saw the incident as a way to subtly claim Reog as their own. Like many Ponorogoans, he reacted to the news of Malaysia’s treachery with a spontaneous 'jancuk!' (damn it!), stating that he felt that  'this art from our ancestors was being claimed, just like that, in the interest of tourism’.

IF I AIN'T GOT YOU                                                                                       By: Alicia Key
Some people live for the fortune
Some people live just for the fame
Some people live for the power, yeah
Some people live just to play the game
Some people think that the physical things
Define what’s within
And I’ve been there before
But that life’s a bore
So full of the superficial
[Chorus:]
Some people want it all
But I don’t want nothing at all
If it ain’t you baby
If I ain’t got you baby
Some people want diamond rings
Some just want everything
But everything means nothing
If I ain’t got you, Yeah
sumber www.rizkyonline.com
Some people search for a fountain
That promises forever young
Some people need three dozen roses
And that’s the only way to prove you love them
Hand me the world on a silver platter
And what good would it be
With no one to share
With no one who truly cares for me
[Chorus:]
Some people want it all
But I don’t want nothing at all
If it ain’t you baby
If I ain’t got you baby
Some people want diamond rings
Some just want everything
But everything means nothing
If I ain’t got you, you, you
Some people want it all
But I don’t want nothing at all
If it ain’t you baby
If I ain’t got you baby
Some people want diamond rings
Some just want everything
But everything means nothing
If I ain’t got you, yeah
[Outro:]
If I ain’t got you with me baby
So nothing in this whole wide world don’t mean a thing
If I ain’t got you with me baby

ROLLING IN THE DEEP                                                              By : Adele
There's a fire starting in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch, and it's bringing me out the dark
Finally I can see you crystal clear
Go ahead and sell me out and I'll lay your shit bare
See how I'll leave with every piece of you
Don't underestimate the things that I will do
There's a fire starting in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch
And it's bringing me out the dark
The scars of your love remind me of us
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all
The scars of your love, they leave me breathless
I can't help feeling
We could have had it all
Rolling in the deep(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside of your hand(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
And you played it to the beat(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)

Baby, I have no story to be told
But I've heard one of you
And I'm gonna make your head burn
Think of me in the depths of your despair
Making a home down there
As mine sure won't be shared

The scars of your love remind me of us
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all
The scars of your love, they leave me breathless
I can't help feeling
We could have had it all
Rolling in the deep(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside of your hand(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
And you played it to the beat(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
We could have had it all
Rolling in the deep
You had my heart inside of your hand
But you played it with a beating
Throw your soul through every open door
Count your blessings to find what you look for
Turn my sorrow into treasured gold
You pay me back in kind and reap just what you sow
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
We could have had it all(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
We could have had it all(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
It all, it all, it all(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
We could have had it all(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
Rolling in the deep(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside of your hand(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
And you played it to the beat(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You could have had it all(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
Rolling in the deep(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)You had my heart inside of your hand(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
But you played itYou played itYou played itYou played it to the beat.

DON'T YOU REMEMBER                                                                      By : Adele

When will i see you again?
You left with no goodbye
Not a single word was said no final kiss to seal any seams
I had no idea of the state we were in
#             I know i have a fickle heart and bitterness
And a wandering eye,and a heaviness in my head
But dont you remember?
Dont you remember?
The reason you loved me before
Baby, please remember me once more
When was the last time you through of me?
                Or have your completely
                Erased me from your memory?
I often think about where i went wrong
The more i do, the less i know
Back to #
Gave you the space so you could breathe
I kept my distance so you would be free
And hope that you find the missing piece
To bring you back to me

When will i see you again

katy perry

Summer after high school when we first met
We make out in your Mustang to Radiohead
And on my 18th Birthday
We got matching tattoos

Used to steal your parents' liquor
And climb to the roof
Talk about our future
Like we had a clue
Never planned that one day
I'd be losing you

In another life
I would be your girl
We'd keep all our promises
Be us against the world

In another life
I would make you stay
So I don't have to say
You were the one that got away
The one that got away

I was June and you were my Johnny Cash
Never one without the other we made a pact
Sometimes when I miss you
I put those records on

Someone said you had your tattoo removed
Saw you downtown singing the Blues
It's time to face the music
I'm no longer your muse

But in another life
I would be your girl
We'd keep all our promises
Be us against the world

In another life
I would make you stay
So I don't have to say
You were the one that got away
The one that got away
The o-o-o-o-o-one [x3]
The one that got away

[Bridge:]
All this money can't buy me a time machine (Nooooo)
It can't replace you with a million rings (Nooooo)
I shoulda told you what you meant to me (Woooooow)
'Cause now I paid the price

In another life
I would be your girl
We'd keep all our promises
Be us against the world

In another life
I would make you stay
So I don't have to say
You were the one that got away
The one that got away
The o-o-o-o-o-one [x3]

In another life
I would make you stay
So I don't have to say
You were the one that got away
The one that got away

ONE MORE NIGHT                                                                        by : Maroon 5
You and i go hard,
at each other like we going to war
you and i go rough
we keep trowing things and slammin’ the door
you and i get so
damn dysfunctional we stopped keeping score
you and i get sick
yeah i know that we can’t do this no more eh
#             but baby there you go again, there yougo  again
making me love you yeah
i stop using my head, using my head
let it all go
get you stuck on my body, on my body
like a tattoo
and now im feeling stupid, feeling stupid
crawling back to you
so i cross my heart, and i hope to die
that i’ll only stay with you
one more night
and i know i said it a million times
but i’ll only stay with you one more night
trying to tell you no
but my body keeps on telling you yes
 trying to tell you stop
but your lipstick got me so out of breath
i’d be waking up, in the morning probably hating  myself
and i’d be waking up
feeling satisfied, but guilty as hell eh
                                back to #
uh uh uh baby give me one more night

tanah lot

Tanah Lot is one of the important directional temples in Bali. The temple is located on a rock just offshore. It is said to be the work of revered 15th century Hindu priest Nirartha and forms an important element of Balinese spirtualism and mythology.
This is an extremely popular tourist destination and the whole area is often very busy indeed, especially in the late afternoons, pre-sunset. The area between the car park (Rp 5,000 per vehicle) and the beach adjacent to the temple is a maze of souvenir shops selling just about every Balinese trinket imaginable.
Once you have fought your way through the souvenir vendors to the beach, you will see the magnificent temple perched on a rock just a few metres offshore. There is a footpath to the raised cliff area just to the south from where the views of the temple and the sunset behind it are outstanding. Photo-opportunities abound.
At low tide visitors can walk to to the base of Tanah Lot. For a small donation you can be blessed and can then walk some 20 metres around the side on a path, that eventually leads up to the temple. You have no better view of than from that on the sand. The only advantage being that you are standing on the base of Tanah Lot itself.
Restoration of the Temple. A comprehensive restoration programme started in the 1990s when it was realised that the rock was seriously eroded and in danger of collapse. This major work resulted in the actual temple being out of bounds which is still the case as of February 2013. This is not really a hindrance to visitors though as entrance to the actual temple is not the key attraction.

ngaben

Ngaben or the Cremation Ceremony is the ritual performed to send the dead through the transition to his next life. The village Kul Kul, hanging in the tower of the village temple, will sound a certain beat to announce the departure of the deceased. The body of the deceased will be placed at Bale Delod, as if he were sleeping, and the family will continue to treat him as if he were still alive yet sleeping. No tears are shed, for he is only gone temporarily and he will reincarnate into the family.
The Priest consults the Dewasa to determine the proper day for the ceremony. On the day of the ceremony, the body of the deceased is placed inside a coffin which is then placed inside a sarcophagus in the form of a buffalo (called Lembu) or a temple structure called Wadah made of paper and light wood. The Wadah will be carried to the village cremation site in a procession.
The climax of Ngaben is the burning of the Wadah, using fire originating from a holy source. The deceased is sent to his afterlife, to be reincarnated in the future.

reog ponorogo culture and identity

Culture and identity
In recent years Indonesia has accused Malaysia of several instances of cultural theft and appropriation. These spats are also mixed with other bilateral issues such as the mistreatment of Indonesian domestic workers in Malaysia and the regular border disputes between the two countries. However, for the people of Ponorogo, the theft of Reog was something much more personal. For them, Reog is so much more than a dance.
On the national stage, weekly Reog performances represent Ponorogo at Taman Mini, the recreation park in Jakarta which displays miniature representations of the major cultures of the archipelago. It is promoted as Ponorogo's  premier tourism drawcard. As the only art form – perhaps the only product – that can be described as uniquely Ponorogoan, it is the only way to express local identity. The great dhadak merak mask, which performers hold by biting down on a concealed wooden bar, appears on billboards, bumper stickers and in statue form throughout Ponorogo. In fact the correlation between dance and region is so strong that, in the words of Reog coach and elementary school curriculum coordinator Jarumi, ‘Ponorogo is identified with Reog, not Reog with Ponorogo!’
The attitude in Ponorogo towards Reog reflects a wider trend in Indonesia, where art forms  emerge from their traditional roles in local cultures and become a symbol for an ethnic group. This trend is strongly influenced by an understanding of culture based on its physical elements, which is promoted by sites such as Taman Mini or the representation of local cultures in school textbooks. The national motto, Unity in Diversity, is often graphically expressed as members of various ethnic groups, each in their traditional costume, standing together smiling, the diversity element reduced to fabrics and feathers. Consequently, traditional dress, dance and architecture are a means of expressing a local identity and to understand one’s place in the great national project that is Indonesia.
